George Town, the largest town on the Malaysian island of Penang, became in 2008 an UNESCO site in recognition of the rows and rows of pre-war shophouses. Many of these traditional Malay buildings with the homes on the second floor and the shops below are in need of repair and a good paint job but the original structures that have been restored show beautifully.
