Barile, Basilicata
On the search for tasting Aglianico wine we went to the town of Barile (which means barrel in Italian). Around the outskirts of the old town are many caves dug into the rock with metal doors. After parking in the main square and talking to a few of the older locals they told us we needed to head to the caves to taste the wine. Soon half the town knew we were two American and two Italians in search of Aglianico wine on a Sunday morning. We were introduced to one local vintner, Vincenzo, who gave us the full tour of his cave, and we tasted the most amazing Aglianico. After we all agreed we must purchase some of the wine, we watched as he bottled the wine directly from the steel containers into the label-free bottles. Barile was an amazing wine experience, the town was ultra cute and the town's people were so friendly to us. It was a surreal experience.
